How To Care For Your Cashmere

Heidi Hennessy knitwear is made using grade A cashmere that is spun in a centuries old mill in Scotland. Choosing to create her knit items using a double stranded technique makes the fabric of her knit accessories both luxurious and durable, pill resistant and machine washable.

Machine Washing

Hand Washing

Machine washing cashmere can be safe and effective when done correctly.
  • To preserve your garment’s softness and shape, place it in a mesh laundering bag to protect it from friction and stretching.
  • Use a wool-safe detergent specifically formulated for delicate fibers, and set your washing machine to a cold, gentle or wool cycle. Avoid fabric softeners and bleach.
  • Once the cycle is complete, gently take your cashmere item out of the laundering bag taking care not to wring the fabric and place it into the dryer by itself.
  • Set your dryer to low heat and tumble dry for 10 - 15 minutes until your items is slightly damp.
  • Shape and lay the garment flat on a towel to air dry. With proper care, your cashmere will stay luxuriously soft and beautiful wash after wash.
Hand washing cashmere is a gentle and effective way to keep your knits fresh.
  • Fill your sink with cool water and add a small amount of wool-safe detergent.
  • Submerge your cashmere item and gently swirl it for a few minutes—avoid rubbing or wringing.
  • Drain the soapy water and refill the sink with clean, cool water to rinse thoroughly, repeating as needed until all detergent is gone.
  • Drain all water from sink and gently press the water out of your knit item, do not wring or stretch.
  • To remove excess water, lay the item flat on a clean towel, roll it up like a log, and press gently.
  • Finally, reshape the garment and lay it flat on a dry towel to air dry completely, away from direct sunlight or heat.

Maintenance

To keep your cashmere looking fresh between washes, regular maintenance with a fabric spray and a pill remover is key. Lightly mist your garment with a fabric spray designed for wool or delicate fabrics to help neutralize odors and refresh the fibers. Never spray with bleach. Heidi Hennessy knit items are knit using a double strand technique that keeps pilling to a minimal, but with wear, pilling is a natural occurrence with all cashmere. When pilling does occur, use a cashmere comb or fabric pill remover to gently lift pills without pulling or damaging the knit. Always work in one direction and avoid excessive pressure. With these simple steps, your cashmere will stay soft, smooth, and beautiful while keeping laundering to a minimum.

Heidi Hennessy Cashmere can also be dry cleaned.
